about

Ludington, MI (where I grew up) has a long storied maritime history, that includes car ferries that have sailed out of its port for over 100 years. The SS Badger is a historical landmark, as it's the last coal fired steam ship on the Great Lakes, and emblematic of the strong spirit of the Ludington community. Released on May 12th 2022 in celebration of the start of the Badger's sailing season and her 70th year.
"Here's to 100 more!",
Eric

lyrics

Born in '52
Set sail in '53
On the Western shore of the Michi gami
My twin sister and I carry the legacy
Of those who came before
And the passenger cars and trains
To safe harbor across the lake
No matter the day, the ice, or the waves
We'll take them safely to shore

It's full steam ahead in our engine rooms
Cried the order from our captains to arrive by noon
For over one hundred years we've sounded our horns
And here's to one hundred more

Linking land and lovers on a four hour ride
Some men had a woman in each port by their side
Others had only us for their brides
And for thirty eight years we were wed
But the railroad business changed
Dormant in the harbor we laid
A decision was made only one twin could be saved
So my sister never sailed again

But for me it was full steam ahead in my engine room
Cried the order from my captain to arrive by noon
For over one hundred years we've sounded our horns
And here's to one hundred more

There's two lights to guide me home
There are two lights to guide me home
Now that my sisters are gone
I've got to make it on my own
But there are two lights to guide me home

Her heart beats inside of me
She donates her organs so that I may be
The one who carries on the legacy
Now we are forever entwined
But I cry tears of black ash everyday
As she rots in her watery grave
My tears are saved and concrete is made
So I can continue as the last of my kind

It's full steam ahead in my engine room
Cries the order from my captains to arrive by noon
For over one hundred years we've sounded our horns
And here's to one hundred more
